Mira Mesa hosted the 32nd Annual Marauder Tournament December 7th, winning by over 100 points. With a score of 262, the Marauders topped 30 teams to take home top prize on the day. Head Coach Craig VanDyke said of the event, “We are very proud of the team’s performance in our home gym. Our Marauder family of parents, wrestlers, managers, alumni volunteers, volunteers from the Navy and awesome coaches came together to host a great event, and winning the team title was icing on the cake.”
Outstanding performances on the day for the Marauders were Tournament Champions Andy Nguyen (126), Matthew Bui (132), and Gavin Kaminski (138). Mira Mesa also had 2 runners up finishes in Ryan Knox (152) and Devhante Hayes (160). Nguyen and Bui pinned their way through the tournament en route to their titles. Bui was named Lightweight MVP for the tournament. The Bruce Quinn Memorial Heavyweight MVP went to Grossmont’s Daryn White, who pinned all four opponents in the 285 weight class. He is the third recipient of the award, named for the late, long-time assistant coach, Bruce Quinn. His widow, Anne, was on hand to present the MVP trophy.
The Marauders also bested Rancho Buena Vista in their first dual of the season, beating the Longhorns 60-12 on December 10th. This was the second straight year the Marauders have prevailed over RBV.
The team will be in action December 20th and 21st at the West Coast Classic. League matches kick off on Wednesday nights in January. The Marauders are seeking their 9th straight league title.
